SQL Server 2008: Compelling Enough to Upgrade?

On April 17, Golden Consultant/Developer Stephen Brouillard attended "Heroes
Happen Here," the Microsoft Product Launch for SQL Server 2008, in Hartford, CT.
Here are his reflections.
With MS SQL Server 2008 expected to release in Q3, the obvious question is "Should I bother to upgrade me BI infrastructure?" While SQL 2008 is not a revolutionary upgrade, here are a few things to consider when you try to decide.
In the past SSIS has always had performance issues doing Lookup Transformations, particularly when operating against large (1 million plus rows) tables; SQL 2008 has improved performance here dramatically. If there has been one major complaint about the SSRS architecture, it's that you needed to load IIS to utilize this feature; no more, the Report Repository and Report Manager have been implemented as Windows Services. Ever wanted to let some power users design reports for you? The most common reason to avoid this was the need to install a Visual Studio instance on the user's PC which generally involved a steep learning curve and intimidated even power users. Microsoft's answer is a stand-alone report designer.
These features are just the tip of the SQL 2008 BI iceberg. For more detailed information visit Microsoft's SQL and BI websites.
