What is the benefit of using the Command Line Scheduler over the built-in Crystal Enterprise 10/Business Objects XI scheduler?

One of the issues with scheduling from ePortfolio, InfoView, or the CMC is that a user has to physically schedule the report, an external application can't schedule the report (except with events, see next question). The Command Line Scheduler allows external applications, batch jobs or even users to schedule at any time with any attributes (parameters, destinations, formats, etc). Another issue with scheduling online is that after scheduling all attributes of the schedule are static, they can't be changed. With the Command Line Scheduler, all attributes can be on the command line, in a file, or both, all of which can be modified easily by a user/application.

What is the benefit of using the Command Line Scheduler over File Based Events?

File Based Events will trigger when a file is first created. The file can be created by an external application, however, no information from the external application can be used as part of the schedule. All attributes (parameters, destinations, formats, etc) must be setup ahead of time, and are completely static, they can't be changed except by manual intervention. Also, all events (including File Based Events) must be set up prior to scheduling, so if a file needs to be scheduled, a user must manually set up the event and schedule. By using the Command Line Scheduler, an application can schedule a report with whatever attributes are necessary without any user intervention.

Why was the Command Line Scheduler written in Java?

Java is cross platform. Since users of the Command Line Scheduler may be using Unix/Linux or Windows, Java was the best choice.

The Command Line Scheduler will work with Crystal Enterprise 10 and Business Objects XI (R1 and R2). It has not been tested with Crystal Enterprise 9.

What can I schedule with the Command Line Scheduler?

Currently, the only things that can be scheduled with the Command Line Scheduler are Crystal Reports. Neither programs, nor Web Intelligence documents can be scheduled.
